休士頓華人業餘西畫社從1994年創辦時的八名會員，在十四年之間增加到八十多名包括中西人士的半國際性組織。我們是聚集了愛好藝術的同好，每星期四在僑教中心集體作畫，由五位老師每月輪流議務指導。這是一個無政治色彩純藝術性的組織，學員以和諧，淨心靜氣，開闢廣闊的視野，在一年兩次的畫展上展現了他(她) 們的才能和天份，把會員神定氣閒的心情充分流露在每一幅展覽的畫面上。作品的主題多款，此次展覽有三十五位的八十六幅作品，以風景畫為最多，佔了百分之五十以上。畫材也是各式各樣，包括鉛筆、炭筆、色筆、水彩、粉彩、膠彩及油彩。會員們也熱心參加其他畫社舉辦的活動如郊遊、參觀美術館、聽講、觀摩名家示範、欣賞音樂、藝術電影等等。詳細情形請上西畫社網站www.hcapc.com
The Houston Chinese Amateur Painting Club (HCAPC) has expanded from eight members to over eighty in fourteen yeas as a semi-international organization. We gathered the art lovers on every Thursday at Chinese Culture Centers to create paintings under the direction of five teachers, who take turn every month to teach us. We are seeking for the pure art, non-political representation. The talents of each member and his (her) thinking clearly reflect on each exhibit. This 2008 spring fine arts exhibition features 86 pieces of art works by 35 of our members for your enjoyment. The subjects and used mediums are diverse, 46 landscape/scenery paintings being the most common form. In addition to biannual fine arts exhibitions, our field trips, live demonstrations/lectures, art movies, and museum trips are among members' favorites. 一位新會員加入西畫社的感想
第一堂課：我選在後面座位，萬一課程艱深，靠近門口，也容易開溜。發了講義，老師上課講解很清楚，社友借給我鉛筆圖畫紙，暫時就安心練習畫。但看看其他社員的作品，人人藝術底子很深，我是一個初學者，怎麼生存？有點自卑。下了課趕緊到僑教中心圖書館，借了素描的書，臨時報抱佛腳。
聯繫：回家後，上西畫社網站看到了今天上課的情形，和老師當場的畫作，可幫助我回憶上課的片段，網站內容也讓我很快的能認識社友。
友情：接下來的兩堂課，聽完講解就試試練習畫，雖然沒自信，由於社友們親切友善的相處，並將他們私人的書本畫冊，主動借給我回家研習，還有老師耐心的提醒修改，漸漸有勇氣在西畫社學習，有了良師益友，就算畫出的結果不怎麼樣，學習的過程能有鼓勵有溫馨也沒枉費時日了。 (魏明珠)
My experience as a new member
First class: I chose to sit on the back row near the exit. I chose this seat so that I could exit the classroom easily if the art course was too difficult for me. The teacher gave a very clear lecture and provided informative handouts. The classmates were very helpful. They gave me pencils and paper with which to draw. They helped me feel at ease. As a novice, I was afraid that I would not able to "survive" the class, as other members seemed to have superior painting techniques. Right after the class, I went to the library to borrow a sketch textbook to study at home.
Learning connection: I went home and visited the painting club's website. It showed details of today's class, including the teacher's painting techniques. The website helped me to refresh the techniques that I had learned. It also helped me to recognize and remember many members.
Friendship: I tried to learn how to paint in the subsequent classes. I got a lot of help from the teacher and many club members. They were very nice and patient with me. In my opinion, the friendly atmosphere was even more precious than the development of my painting skills. (By Pearl Wei)
